We’re proud to share that Mallol has won the 2025 Architizer A+Award Popular Choice in the Sustainable Interior category for our project Krume Bäcker.

The Architizer A+Awards is the world’s largest program celebrating outstanding architecture. With a global audience of over 400 million, it honors projects that blend design excellence with meaningful impact. Evaluated for form, function, and impact, the Sustainability category recognizes design that integrates environmental responsibility. Krume Bäcker blends Austrian baking tradition with a Panamanian sense of place, using local, low-impact materials and techniques to create a space rooted in craft, warmth, and community. One of its defining features is a bar and interior walls built with compacted earth, crafted by Aparato A in collaboration with local artisans. These elements offer thermal and acoustic benefits while reducing the project’s carbon footprint.

The furniture was designed in collaboration with Alma Studio and crafted by Mallol Lifestyle Studio using submerged hardwoods salvaged from the Bayano Reservoir, responsibly extracted with support from the Guna Madugandí community. Flexible layouts, natural textures, and warm lighting create a space that fosters community, simplicity, and ecological care.

By combining local tradition with sustainable innovation, Krume Bäcker shows how design can be both rooted in place and forward-thinking. We hope this recognition inspires more projects that prioritize culture, performance, and low environmental impact.
